When diversion comes from within: a chicken load stops being just freight

A refrigerated load diverted during a legitimate journey

FreightWaves reported on 19 September 2026 that Memphis police found several people removing boxes from a semi-trailer at a hotel during an operation that began with an unrelated warrant. The complaint alleges that the driver offered a Koch Foods frozen-chicken load to settle a drug debt. The $110,000 shipment had left Morton, Mississippi, for Swedesboro, New Jersey. Charges were announced against 12 people; all remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The trust boundary travels with the load

A carrier and driver authorised for pickup are not automatically authorised to change destination, open the unit or hand product to third parties. Operational evidence should connect identity, vehicle, lot, route, geofences and every custody transfer. A diversion to a hotel, an incompatible stop or an unload without an approved consignee should open an exception while the goods can still be protected.

In a cold chain, recovered does not mean releasable

The carrier said it recovered its equipment and disposed of the remaining goods. That distinction matters: once boxes have been removed, split among vehicles and potentially exposed outside controlled conditions, physical location no longer proves food safety. Temperature, exposure time, seals, packaging and the quarantine decision should remain attached to the lot. Traceability work such as FoodSteps (https://foodsteps.pt/) reinforces the need to preserve origin and product history when a journey leaves its approved plan.

A DPP should separate recovered product from released product

A Digital Product Passport can assemble origin, lot, thermal requirements, authorised parties, alerts and post-exception assessments. The record should show whether a unit was recovered, inspected, rejected or destroyed. Without that distinction, cargo can return to inventory merely because it is back under physical control even though its integrity is no longer demonstrated.

Five controls against insider diversion

  • Bind driver, tractor, trailer, lot and destination before departure.
  • Alert on stops, deviations and openings outside shipment rules.
  • Require independent confirmation before changing consignee, route or unload point.
  • Automatically quarantine food when custody or temperature can no longer be demonstrated.
  • Record the final decision by lot while preserving original data and the approver's accountability.
