What shipment diversion (BEC) is
Business Email Compromise is when a criminal poses as the shipper, carrier or customer and redirects delivery to a fake warehouse. High-value cargo — AI hardware, metals, premium food — disappears without anyone hijacking a truck. California police already record violent thefts of data-center servers; indicted conspiracies reach $4.5M and $10M.
Why verifiable origin stops it
If the cargo carries an immutable record of origin and chain of custody, the receiver confirms before accepting: is this truck the authorized shipment, or a diversion? A QR code or NFC tag links the pallet to the blockchain record — and that record says where it came from, what route it took, and who is authorized to receive it. Impersonation fails when the proof is on the cargo, not in an email.
The KitKat case: even chocolate needs provenance
In March 2026, 12 tonnes of KitKat vanished from a truck in Europe. Food cargo is a target too — and without verified origin, no one tells a legitimate batch from a diverted one. A digital product passport would prove the real route of those 12 tonnes, from factory to shelf.
