Cargo theft: how real-time intelligence helps prevent loss and recover goods faster

Cargo theft is not a marginal risk. TAPA EMEA reported 58,661 cargo-crime incidents across 101 countries in the 18 months to 30 June 2026. The cases with a declared value — only 7.8% of the total — already exceeded €1 billion. The size of the unknown loss makes one lesson clear: security must detect abnormal behaviour while a shipment is still recoverable, not merely document it after delivery fails.

Prevention starts with the cargo, not only the truck

A vehicle GPS position is useful, but the truck and the goods can separate. Cargo-level devices preserve visibility when pallets, boxes or containers are transferred, unloaded at an unauthorised location or moved into another vehicle. The monitoring rules can follow the asset from origin to destination rather than ending at the cab.

  • Preserve timestamps, sensor events and custody records for police, insurers and customers.
  • After recovery, verify both identity and condition before returning goods to circulation.

The advantage is time

The strongest anti-theft programme combines physical security, trained people and real-time cargo intelligence. Sensors do not replace secure parking, vetted partners or a response plan. They make those controls faster and better informed. When minutes matter, early detection and a continuous asset-level trail can be the difference between a preventable incident, a timely recovery and a permanent loss.
