Cold-chain cyberattack: when stock is lost without leaving the warehouse
A digital attack created physical losses
During the night of October 11-12, 2026, attackers compromised internet-connected refrigeration systems at approximately 350 French supermarkets. According to Beinsure's coverage based on Reuters reporting, some equipment was driven to 50°C, forcing large quantities of food to be discarded and exposing retailers to potential losses of tens of millions of euros. Location does not prove condition
The inventory remained inside the stores but was no longer commercially usable. The case shows the limit of traceability based only on where a product is: for perishables, teams must also prove temperature, exposure duration, equipment status and the operational response taken at each site.
Evidence must connect product, sensor and equipment
A useful chain of custody binds each lot to the refrigerator or freezer protecting it, sensor readings, controller software version and maintenance events. A blockchain record can preserve these data across retailer, supplier, insurer and authority, making clear when a reading was created and whether it changed after the incident.
The digital passport should record exceptions, not only origin
A Digital Product Passport can state origin and composition while also carrying current status: released, quarantined, inspected or discarded. Connecting lot identity with condition events helps prevent products exposed to unsafe temperatures from returning to commerce without a documented decision.
Disposal also needs a chain of custody
When food is declared unfit, a company must prove which lots were affected, who assessed the risk, what quantities were removed and their final destination. FoodSteps' approach connects traceability, condition and corrective action, reducing the risk that compromised products re-enter the market and creating evidence for audits and insurance claims.
