Compromised logistics accounts: when legitimate freight is redirected

The theft can begin after a legitimate pickup

In a warning issued before Labor Day 2026, Verisk CargoNet explained that criminals enter trusted freight channels through compromised carrier accounts, email, business phones or compliance platforms. They can then change instructions after a legitimate carrier has taken possession. Its seven-day Labor Day analysis for 2021–2025 identified 273 incidents and about $31.8 million in goods; CargoNet estimated losses above $359 million in the first half of 2026 alone.

Plausible documents are no longer enough

The risk became tangible in Montclair, California: two beer shipments worth about $70,000 disappeared after pickups from the same distribution centre, one arranged with fraudulent documentation. Validation must confirm the order, driver, vehicle, company, contact and destination through independent channels — not merely check whether a document looks authentic.

Anchor the chain of custody at the right moment

Every handover should create a verifiable event: who released and received the goods, which asset moved, where and when. A destination, phone or driver change after pickup should require fresh authentication and approval outside the potentially compromised channel. Blockchain does not prove that an identity is truthful by itself; it preserves the checks and authorisations made by the process in a tamper-resistant history.

The passport follows identity and condition

A Digital Product Passport can associate the product, lot, origin, owner and custody events. If freight is diverted and recovered, that history helps confirm that it matches the dispatched lot and whether it was opened, substituted or improperly exposed. In food chains, FoodSteps (https://foodsteps.pt/) shows how origin traceability can connect with operational information; sensors add evidence of location and condition in transit.

One simple rule for every change

After pickup, treat any change of destination, driver, vehicle, contact or time window as a new custody act: validate it through a second channel, record who approved it and compare actual movement with the authorised instruction. The goal is to stop a compromised account from turning legitimate communication into an invisible route to theft.
