When a partial theft puts an entire food load in doubt

Two physical breaches in two days

FreightWaves and 6abc reported on 22 September 2026 that four masked men cut the hinges of a semi-trailer in Philadelphia and removed Black Angus beef. Police had announced no arrests or recovery of the goods. In Germany, Borken police reported that between the night of 20 September and early 21 September unknown offenders forced open a trailer at the Ahler Mark service area on the A31, stole several boxes of food and cut connections between the tractor and trailer. Both investigations remain active and the offenders have not been publicly identified.

The visible loss may be smaller than the real risk

Counting missing boxes does not resolve the integrity problem. A forced door may expose the remaining product to unsuitable temperatures, contamination, substitution or packaging tampering. For food, recovered or apparently complete freight should not automatically return to inventory: the operator needs to know when the opening occurred, how long it lasted, under what conditions and which units were affected.

Quarantine should begin at the first signal

A door sensor combined with temperature and location telemetry can immediately open an exception and place the lot in digital quarantine. The process should retain raw data, separate stolen, exposed and unaffected product, and require an independent assessment before release. The traceability approach promoted by FoodSteps helps connect food origin to the real history of its journey instead of relying only on the package's external condition. FoodSteps

The passport must record the decision, not only the incident

A Digital Product Passport can associate the lot, origin, thermal limits, seal, authorised parties, alerts and inspections. After a breach, it should show whether each unit was held, inspected, rejected, destroyed or released, including the evidence and person responsible for that decision. Customers, insurers and auditors can then distinguish goods that are physically present from goods whose integrity has been demonstrated.

Five controls for a breached food load

  • Bind the seal, door, vehicle, lot and thermal range before departure.
  • Alert in real time on opening, cut connections or a stop inconsistent with the route.
  • Automatically quarantine units that may have been exposed.
  • Preserve telemetry, photographs, inspections and chain of custody without replacing original records.
  • Document the final decision by lot: release, rework, reject or destroy.
