Partial cargo theft: when the truck arrives but goods are missing
A cut in the curtain, several pallets opened
On the morning of October 14, 2026, witnesses reported an intrusion into a truck's cargo area at a service stop in Sinsheim, Germany. Police said the offenders cut an opening about 40 centimetres wide in the curtain, entered the load space, opened several pallets and stole several electronic devices. The value of the theft and damage had not yet been established. Read the report based on Mannheim police information
The vehicle can arrive even though the shipment has changed
Pilferage is less visible than the disappearance of a trailer. The journey continues, the driver may not immediately detect the breach, and truck-level documents can still appear valid. An analysis published by FoodNavigator on October 16, citing Overhaul data, says theft of part of a shipment accounted for 46% of US incidents analysed in the second quarter of 2026, up from 37% in the previous quarter.
Every pallet needs a verifiable identity
A blockchain record can connect each pallet or lot to the vehicle, seal, loading place and time, and authorised opening or cross-dock events. When a count, seal or identity no longer matches, the exception becomes visible before final receipt. The record cannot prevent a curtain from being cut, but it makes it harder for an altered shipment to be accepted as intact. Explore Sensefinity blockchain
A breach also calls condition into question
After an intrusion, the issue is not only what is missing. Disturbed packages may have lost protection, traceability, accessories or warranty. A Digital Product Passport can associate the incident, inspection and quarantine or release decision with the affected lot, without confusing goods that are present with goods whose integrity has been demonstrated. For food, the risk continues after the stock count
If pallets carry food, medicines or other sensitive goods, a breach can also mean exposure, contamination and a temperature excursion. Quantity reconciliation must be combined with safety and traceability criteria before the lot returns to market. Visit FoodSteps
