A diverted load crossed three states
FreightWaves reported on 14 September 2026 that a six-pallet copper load worth $586,000 left DeKalb, Illinois, for Rock Hill, South Carolina, but was routed to a Kentucky warehouse. Police said the actors allegedly used a legitimate carrier’s identity and published contact details. After the 11 September alert, equipment GPS helped locate the goods, chassis and container; four people were taken into custody in Kentucky and Ohio. Authorities recovered the cargo and equipment within eight hours after notification.
The clock starts before the formal report
Fast recovery depends on recognising early that a discrepancy is no longer a delay but an incident. The shipper should compare the expected carrier, driver, registration, device, time, route, destination and first geofence. A real company identity does not prove that the person at the dock legitimately controls the pickup. If signals remain split across email, the TMS, a broker platform and telematics, each team sees only part of the diversion and loses time reconciling versions.
Vehicle and goods need separate identities
Tractor or trailer GPS is valuable, but the freight can be unloaded while the equipment moves elsewhere. Each pallet, container or logistics unit should have an identifier linked to the lot, manifest and custodian. Asset-level sensors or tags add movement, opening and separation signals. When a unit enters an unauthorised location, the alert should identify exactly which goods are at risk, not merely where the truck is.
The evidence package should travel with the alert
A response team should not rebuild the case from scratch. The alert should carry a unique reference, cargo description and value, authorised origin and destination, pre-validated contacts, identity declared at pickup, last position, geofence history, door or seal events and relevant documents. Prepare the first eight hours before the incident
The organisation should define in advance who declares an incident, who may share telemetry, which contacts are verified outside the incoming email and which authorities or industry networks must be alerted. Short exercises should test five timings: discrepancy detection, pickup validation, evidence-package creation, partner sharing and recovery confirmation. The result is not a promise that every load will be recovered; it is a response with less ambiguity, preserved evidence and faster decisions.
