When the carrier is legitimate but its controller is not
A real company can carry a false intention
On October 9, 2026, Overdrive reported the conviction of two participants in a scheme that bought or used established carriers to win authentic contracts and collect loads that never reached their destinations. Trial evidence covered diverted electronics, appliances, solar panels, footwear and tyres, with at least $2 million in losses between 2024 and 2025. Read the Overdrive report
Company history is no longer sufficient proof
An acquired company may retain its name, operating authority, insurance and history that passed earlier checks. Validation performed only at onboarding creates lasting trust in facts that can change from one day to the next.
Verify every custody handoff
Before releasing a load, the shipper should use approved channels to confirm the company, driver, tractor, trailer, registration, load reference and destination. Recent changes to ownership, contacts, driver or vehicle should pause release. A blockchain record can preserve authorisations and custody transfers without replacing identity verification. Evidence must follow the goods
A valid company credential does not prove that a specific lot is held by the right operator. A Digital Product Passport can connect origin, lot or serial number, authorised carrier, vehicle, destination and each custody acceptance. If goods leave the trailer, the break in their history can still be located. Explore Sensefinity Digital Product Passport
For food, identity and condition cannot be separated
Diversion of food cargo may compromise temperature, seals and exposure time. Release or rejection should combine lot identity, condition readings and food-safety procedures. Visit FoodSteps
